Academic Libraries for Social Empowerment of Disabled People: Citizen Science Actions of the CAELUM Project in Greece
(Ukrainian State University of Science and Technologies, Dnipro, 2025) Defteraiou, Korina; Oikonomou, Stefania; Zourou, Katerina
ENG: This paper examines an innovative approach to social inclusion of persons with disabilities through citizen science initiatives implemented within academic library settings. As part of the Erasmus+ CAELUM project, Web2Learn, in collaboration with the University of Macedonia Library, will design and deploy community-driven actions addressing the needs of disabled citizens, specifically targeting Deaf and Hard of Hearing individuals and those with reduced mobility. This case study provides valuable insights on how academic libraries can serve as catalysts for social inclusion and empowerment by combining institutional resources with community-led citizen science methodologies. The citizen science actions involve at least 20 participants, including academic library staff, disabled citizens, and higher education students. Finally, this contribution will share reflections on the expected outcomes of the Greek CAELUM case study, namely how academic libraries may: a) achieve improved crisis response capabilities for social inclusion, b) adopt practical solutions for accessibility challenges, and c) enhance civic participation of both students and disabled community members in shaping their communities' wellbeing.
