Abstract
ENG: The article is devoted to the problems of translating proper names in view of the intensification of intercultural contacts and the growing volume of translation literature. It is proved that proper names, like names, carry cultural and social bias, often reflect the archetypal component of a particular onyme, and therefore are eloquent, i.e. contain additional information about the origin, character, habits of the character and his/her place in the social environment. They contain “hidden” intertextual information, which is a kind of challenge for a translator that can arouse research interest. Choosing the right method of translating an onyme is a key task for a translator. The main methods of translating onymes are transliteration, transcription, transposition, calquing, or a combination of several of these methods. It was found that transcription is the most commonly used method of translation. The peculiarity of the transposition method is that proper names have a common linguistic origin in different languages, but differ in form and are used for “intertranslation”. It is emphasized that this method is used quite rarely in translation, mainly for the transmission of biblical proper names, historical names, names of rulers and monarchs. Namely, thanks to calquing as a translation method, a large number of borrowings have arisen in the process of intercultural communication. The authors consider the methodology of anthroponyms translation sequence proposed by Tereshchenko L. and Nechyporenko V. to be appropriate and important: 1) finding out the etymology of the proper name; 2) identifying the semantically motivated basis of the name, checking whether this semantics carries significant information about the character; 3) studying all possible translation options, including historically fixed options; 4) selecting the most appropriate equivalent; 5) matching the found equivalent with the requirements of word formation and spelling of the target language; 6) analyzing and evaluating the level of semantic approximation of the translation to the original. Each proper name should be considered separately, individually taking into account the original language and its cultural characteristics.
