Atlas Shrugged: Feminism Discourse or Discourse of Femininity
(Видавничий дім Дмитра Бураго, Київ, 2015) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: The current piece “Atlas Shrugged: Feminism Discourse or Discourse of Femininity” is an attempt to determine the differences between feminism discourse and discourse of femininity and to investigate the connection between feminism and objectivism. The authors talk about the concept of the representation of the feminine self as a part gender studies and the fact that it becomes more and more acute; it deals with beauty stereotypes and takes one of the prominent places in practically all the western cultures. They mention that the basic aim for a literary work is conveying some specific cultural ideas, discursive peculiarities; however, it is important to understand that discourse cannot be regarded as a purely linguistic notion, it represents interests for psychologists, linguists, culture experts as well as scholars in the in the study of literature. The research touches upon the philosophy of Ayn Rand’s, i.e. objectivism. Her philosophy, in essence, is the concept of man as a heroic being, with his own happiness as the moral purpose of his life, with productive achievement as his noblest activity, and reason as his only absolute. Further the authors argue that objectivism and feminism, specifically radical feminism, are concepts which may rarely be put together, as far as objectivism is extremely about individualism, while feminism struggles for collective result. In its turn feminism, especially radical feminism sees a number of misogynistic traits in objectivism and perceives the latter as a ‘white male’ construct. The authors come to the conclusion that the basic idea of Rand’s regarding the women rights was that women had not only rights, but responsibilities as well. In her viewpoint success of a woman did not depend on the career she obtained, but rather on the values she possessed. Essentially she tried to point out that women should develop themselves in the sphere where they may get optimal results, and they should chose not accordingly being women, but accordingly their abilities.

(Едмонтон, Канада, 2020) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: Abstract: Learning English as a means of intercultural communication requires focused attention. The role of English in the world in the 21st century has increased significantly. This is due, in particular, to the fact that it is spoken by approximately 31% of EU citizens, and for 16% it is mother tongue. Today, English has become the language of technology, science, culture, and business. This is evidenced by the fact that three-quarters of the world's correspondence, 80% of e-mail and the Internet content are in English. Most international documents, articles, literary works, instructions are written in English. Knowledge of English broadens the horizon, and allows people to learn more about the culture and customs of other peoples.

EN: The issue of teaching a foreign language was been raised long time ago, but today, with the growing role of the English language, the issue of communication in English is being explored even more deeply. Scientists pay considerable attention to the concept of “communicative competence”. This concept emerged in the teaching of foreign language in the 80's, proposed by his American scientist D. Himes, who interpreted communicative competence as an integrative entity, which includes not only linguistic but also socio-cultural components.

The Fountainhead: Specifics of Male Characters’ Verbalization in the Novel by Ayn Rand
(Національний університет "Острозька академія", Острог, 2019) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: Abstract: In the current piece under the title “The Fountainhead: Specifics of Male Characters’ Verbalization in the Novel by Ayn Rand”, the authors make an attempt to analyze the verbalization, actualization and representation of central male literary characters of the novel “The Fountainhead” (1943) by the American writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. The subjects of the study are four main male literary characters: Howard Roark, Peter Keating, Gale Wynand and Ellsworth Toohey. The authors of the article set themselves the task of analyzing a number of relevant scientific works devoted to problems of verbalization, actualization, and the use of stylistic techniques used by the writers of literary fiction (on the example of the novel by Ayn Rand) to create an artistic image, which in its turn should interact with the readership and convey the ideas of the writer in question. The authors of the current investigation conclude that the artistic literary images of Ayn Rand's novel “The Fountainhead” are verbalized with the help of a wide range of stylistic devices and other expressive means; Ayn Rand effectively transmits the verbalized emotional state, involving the main of its components: situational, evaluative, sociocultural, lingno-cognitive, and the like.

Gender Discourse of “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini
(Ужгородський національний університет, Ужгород, 2020) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: This piece aims to investigate some aspects of gender discourse verbalization in modern literature on the basis of the fiction novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini. The piece in question aims to research two main female characters of the novel: Laila and Mariam in terms of feminism and feminist discourse actualization under religious (Muslim) norms. The history of women's struggle for their rights, despite the fact that this struggle is an integral part of human history, is almost unknown to the vast majority of citizens, both men and women. It is only in recent decades that feminism has become the subject of public debate, research, and in sometimes, even a discipline at certain universities. The struggle of women for their rights, both political and economic, cultural and, above all, social began to gain momentum with the advent of suffragism and this process is still far from being over. Recently, interest in women's history has increased significantly, as women's position in society is an acute social problem. However, despite all the achievements of feminism, men still prevail in all spheres of life, especially when it comes to countries whose citizens profess Islam and obey Sharia law. The ideology of feminism, which became widespread in the mid-twentieth century, has greatly influenced the way women think, live, and behave in society. During its development, feminism has emerged in different directions, which, in turn, have formed under the influence of society. Gender discourse analysis is one area of critical discursive research that focuses on establishing the correspondence between the gender structure of society and the gender asymmetric structures of discursive practices. Analyzing a number of scientific works (philosophical, literary, linguistic, etc.) The authors come to the conclusion that linguopragmatic aspect is of utmost importance for a literary fiction writer trying to introduce both literary and linguistic concepts (as well as philosophical) peculiar to the discourse in question: Khaled Hosseini portrays his female characters as fighters, not as victims, which is a rather extreme idea for Muslim communities, especially rural Muslim communities of the past and present.

Genre Structure VS. Literary Concepts in “The Butterfly Garden” by Dot Hutchison
(Державний вищий навчальний заклад «Ужгородський національний університет», Ужгород, 2021) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
ENG: The purpose of the given piece is an attempt to analyze some aspects of the structure of a literary piece belonging to a genre of mass literature, i.e., a thriller and the relevance and importance of this structure comparing to the ideas and concepts conveyed by the author in the literary work. In the current investigation the authors dwell on the defining a genre of thriller and both compare and contrast it with an older and rather more established genre of the detective story. To achieve the goal both cultural and historical method and comparative and historical method will be used. The first method will give us opportunity to trace national peculiarities, which influence the whole literary piece in terms of pragmatics: help us to understand the authors ideas, which should be conveyed to the readership, from the socio-cultural point of view, whereas the second method will give us a perspective on modern products of not only mass literature but of mass culture on the whole. The basis for the current study is scientific pieces by both domestic and foreign scholars, which are devoted to the problems of literary reception and intercultural aspect of modern literary pieces. A thriller is a genre of mass literature and naturally has umpteen elements peculiar to this part of literature; however there are some idiosyncratic features as well. In the course of the research, it becomes obvious that a thriller novel may not have a strict genre frame, however, one of the main distinctive features for a thriller is presence of suspense: psychological tension, which comes into a novel and does not let readership lose their attention till the last pages. To illustrate the irrelevance of the rigid structure in comparison with the significance of ideas and notions recognition by the readership when we deal with a piece belonging to mass literature, the authors have chosen a thriller novel by Dot Hutchison “The Butterfly Garden” (2017). In our opinion this novel lacks the traditional structure, however, falls into the category of thriller novels due to the features pertinent to the genre, which are kept in the novel.

Humanistic Intention of Dystopia in "The Giver" by Lois Lowry
(Дніпровський національний університет залізничного транспорту імені академіка В. Лазаряна, Дніпро, 2021) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: Purpose. The aim of this piece is to study the manifestations of humanistic pursuits in a literary fiction work. The main interest is related to the interpretation of those existential and sociocultural concepts that underlie the dys-topian novel by Lois Lowry. The theoretical basis of the study is based on works on phenomenology and the theo-ry of reader reception. The method of phenomenology is a descriptive method: the phenomena of consciousness cannot be reduced to limited cognitive forms, and therefore language and means of description are important along with their ability to reveal consciousness through phenomena. Originality of the study lies in the investigation of the humanistic aspect of a dystopian society, depicted in the modern literary fiction. The main attention is focused on the phenomenological identification of existential ideas and their manifestation in the literary characters of the given work. The conclusions speak about the tendencies of humanization and dehumanization of a man and society in the context of philosophical, ethical and aesthetic issues, which are the most important and urgent problems of our time. The current study finds out that in the modern dystopian literature and philosophy, the main subject of atten-tion is a human. This human is perceived and depicted as a phenomenon that cannot be grasped by the notions ofintimation and essence. The human is a creature whose freedom presupposes a constant departure from nature and habitual reality to the realm of transcendent through the desire to comprehend his or her certain way of existence.

Literary Features of Syntactic Representation of the Concept of the City in the Novel «The Kite Runner» by Khaled Hossini
(Міжнародний гуманітарний університет, Одеса, 2018) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: The purpose of this piece is an attempt to analyze literary features of syntactic representation of the concept of the city in the novel by Afghan-American writer Khaled Hossini under the title “The Kite Runner.” The basis for the term “concept” is the study of the semantic language system. Among the scholars involved in the study of this branch of linguistics are Aristotle, Arutyunova, Vynogradov, Grigoriev, Humboldt, Carnap, Lewis, Potebnya, Russell, and others. The concepts are used as ready-made cliches (in analogy to grammatical forms) in completely different, inappropriate contexts, without thinking of what meaning is enshrined in this word in the minds of most people, which serves the recipient as the basis for understanding the relayed sense. Linguistic meanings convey only a part of our knowledge of the world. The main part of this knowledge is preserved in our consciousness in the form of various mental structures – concepts of varying degrees of complexity and abstraction, in the content of which new characteristics can be constantly included. The study of each author's concept enables detection of generalities and specifics in a particular segment, which contributes to a better understanding of systemic laws in general. Under the concept, we will consider the totality of knowledge and perceptions associated with this concept, and associations (both individual and culturally fixed), linking it with other phenomena. The writer's view of the city is the textualization of reality, the embodiment of the “stranger”, the boy who left and then returned for the only reason of not recognizing the city that once he belonged to and most certainly still does to some extent. On the one hand, the image of the city is quite realistic, it lives in the ages of its complex and controversial fate, on the other hand, appears to be an illusion, a model of simulation.

Manifestation of Gender Inequalities in “The Little Friend” by Donna Tartt
(Класичний приватний університет, м. Запоріжжя, 2019) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: The current research is an attempt to look at the peculiarities of gender inequalities and gender discrimination in the southern states of the United States of America. The problem of feminist literary criticism is neither new nor well researched at this point of time; therefore any research in this sphere is rather relevant. Being progressive country, where feminism is well developed in the north, situation in the southern states of the USA was and still is rather different: people in those states tend to support and rely on old norms and practices, and that means that women are perceived not as fully functioning members of society, they were facilitators for men’s success and advancement in social circles and professional life. Feminism and women’s studies are one of the most relevant trends of modern theoretical research. These issues are pertinent to sociology, psychology, linguistics and the last but not the least literary studies. Literature, especially fiction, is the sphere where both new and old ideas find their implementation and interpretation and it is additionally the vast field of languages’ pragmatic aspect realization. On the basis of the literary work by an American writer Donna Tartt the authors of the current piece make an attempt to analyze the functionality of a southern American family and the roles of females in this family in particular and the whole society in general. Having looked at the discourse of the main characters of the novel the authors of the study come to the conclusion that the role of women was largely underrated. Males had the opportunities for development, prestigious career, professional growth and, most importantly freedom of choice. Females were left with submission, emotion, lack of ability to react and make decisions as well as overcome difficulties and be capable of presenting a sound judgment. In “The Little Friend” by an American writer Donna Tartt readers come across peculiar characteristics of females’ societal functioning in the southern states America; Donna Tartt gives opportunity to the readers to interpret those peculiarities in the manner acceptable for them (thus making the readership a collective co-author).

The Purity of Genre and «A secret history» by Donna Tartt
(Маріупольский державний університет, Маріуполь, 2018) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: The purpose of this piece is an attempt to categorize a literary work by Donna Tartt under the title ‘A Secret History.’ Current investigation aims to look at the literary work by Donna Tartt «A Secret History» from the point of view of postmodern aesthetics. Having analyzed a number of scientific works of distinguished scholars in the field of literary studies the authors come to the conclusion that it is impossible to place any postmodern literary work in the frame of one genre. The number of topics and issues a postmodern writer touches in his or her work may be infinite, thus genre characteristic features or attributes of a literary work are as well: under postmodernism the text itself is omnipotent and cannot be restricted to one genre, thus we support Mikhail Bakhtin’s and other scientists thought regarding the nonexistence of the purity of genre and point out on characteristic features of different genres present in one literary text, i.e. «A Secret History» novel by Donna Tartt.

EN: The article deals with term “image”, which is used in various branches of scientific knowledge. The research dwells on the different aspects of the analysis of the image. This piece is an attempt to research artistic images in the novel “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt. The authors analyze a number of views regarding the artistic image interpretation and emphasize the point that the artistic image has many forms: images of people, pictures of nature, urban landscapes, and images of things reproduced with the help of imagination. The y talk about the origins of creation of the debut novel by Donna Tartt “A Secret History” and point out the specifics of the novel: the story is an inverted detective story, not whodunit, but whydunit. The traditional detective story sets the task for the reader to solve the mystery/crime along with the detective (officer of the law or private investigator, professional or amateur sleuth, regardless). However, the intrigue of the investigation and catching the culprit/culprits does not play the main part in the novel in question – the creation of sophisticated artistic images was the main task for the author. With the help of elaborate artistic images the author manages to deliver the whole specter of submeanings to the main storyline. Nowadays there is no clear definition of terminology; their inter-relationship depends on the approach to understanding concepts of literary images; the fuzzy boundary between these concepts begins to blur in connection with the emergence of new linguistic means that combine the features of both expressive means and stylistic techniques. The results of the research underline the fact that the notion of artistic image owes its birth to fiction, where language becomes both a means and subject of art; states that artistic image serves as a way of understanding the world and the language of art. It also demonstrates that it has many forms of reproduction: images of people, pictures of nature, urban landscapes, images of things that are embodied with the help of imagination, put into new relationships through the constructive thinking of the artist.

The Purity of Genre and «A secret history» by Donna Tartt (preprint)

Transformation of the Detective Story in Donna Tartt’s Novel “A Secret History”
(Національний педагогічний університет ім. Г. С. Сковороди, Харків, 2018) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: Comparative literary studies show that the detective genre today is one of the most popular genres of literature. This piece is an attempt to explore the detective story genre boundaries and ascertain attributes of this genre in the novel “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt. Today, detective literature provokes interest not only with readers, but also with literary critics. The research of works of the detective genre is carried out by such scientists as M.A.Bondarenko, M.Butor, I.V.Belozerova, S.Zizek, and many others; they investigate various aspects of detective literature: the place of literary pieces of the detective genre in mass and elite literature, engage in the development of typology of genres and subgenres, etc. The inverted detective story (another name is “howcatchim” is a detective story, mystery story, where the crime is delivered to the reader in the beginning of a story, and the identity of the perpetrator is usually shown to the reader as well. This is a story, where the reader has the advantage compare to the sleuth. There may also be subsidiary puzzles, such as why the crime was committed, but those are cleared up along the way. This format is the opposite of the more typical “whodunit”, where all of the details of the perpetrator of the crime are not revealed until the story’s climax. “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt deals with a number of issues that lie beyond the characteristics of any detective story. It deals with philosophical matters, with the eternal, sublime things. Some of those things are loss of self, control, horror; sublime and divine, etc. “A Secret History” by Donna Tartt, though possessing attributes of the detective story, namely an inverted detective story, due to the murder introduction in the beginning of narrative lacks main features of the detective story. It may structurally look like one, though it is not such in essence. The novel lacks a protagonist detective and antagonist detective, investigation process, evidence gathering, just or unjust sentence, perpetrators identity uncovering. One of the most significant features of a protagonist of the detective story is to be a hero (the definition of being hero may vary) and bring justice, which is not the case in Tartt’s novel.

Verbalization of Female Artistic Images in “A Thousand Splendid Suns” by Khaled Hosseini: Gender Aspect
(Національний університет “Острозька академія”, Острог, 2020) Muntian, Antonina O.; Shpak, Iryna V.
EN: Annotation: The purpose of this study is an attempt to examine women's artistic images and their verbalization in Khaled Hosseini's novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns”. In this study, the authors try to analyze the manifestations of the feminine discourse of the two main female characters in the novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” in sociocultural and linguostylistic aspects. In the recent years women’s studies are becoming more and more significant; female discourses are being analyzed form different scientific points of view. Considering the relevant scientific works of eminent scientists, the authors of this article conclude that artistic images play an extremely important role in the implementation of current topics and ideas of any literary work: artistic images have the ability to produce new ideas and communicate these ideas to readers who in their turn could interpret them according to the cultural background, which ensures the formation of the linguistic and cultural concepts. Khaled Hosseini’s female characters’ discourse in his novel “A Thousand Splendid Suns” is multilayered: on the one hand, it is actualization of the personal fight for basic human rights within family hierarchy (cultural aspect) and on the other hand, it is the fight for civil rights from the point of view of social context.
